Cruising the Mississippi River

I spent a good deal of time trying to get data that I could use to determine the facts and allay my fears about traveling up and down that portion of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers that pertain to the Great Loop, that part of the journey from St. Louis, Mo. to the start of the Land Between the Lakes in Kentucky.

There has been much written and said about this stretch, probably all true in some part or another but that can be said for just about any large body of water.

We came down the river in September of 2005 and went back up in June of 2006. I am in the planning stages of a trip up this same route in early April of 2007. This doesn't make me an expert by any stretch but I think it does entitle me  to offer some of the  conclusions, observations, and data sources I have used for these journeys.

However, these are my observations and conclusions today - .February 20, 2007.
You have to judge whether they fit you or not and decide if they are still valid for your circumstances.

Rather than generate a long page I have built pages for the issues - concerns- listed below.
As I get more concerned (sic) I will add more pages.

What Are Your Concerns? - Fuel Stops ... Do I Carry Enough?

What Are Your Concerns?  - Water Depth and Current

This site is more of an academic exercise than anything else. I have written for whoever might be interested but mainly because I like to teach and writing this as a tutorial gives me some measure of satisfaction. If it is useful to whoever reads it, so much the better.
